Phoenix Mill, the oldest building in Wakefield’s Rutland Mills complex (c.1800), is Grade II listed and required sensitive restoration as part of the Tileyard North regeneration scheme, a major creative and cultural hub for the region.
Our role
HZS Stainless Steel was engaged to design, fabricate, and install all specified metalwork for Phoenix Mill. This involved a complex package where structural performance, safety, and aesthetics had to be carefully balanced within the constraints of a heritage-listed environment.
Staircases & Balustrades
- Internal and external staircases fabricated from mild steel with galvanised protection.
- Balustrades designed to comply with building regulations while matching architectural detailing.
- Installed within restricted spaces, requiring close coordination with masonry and floor slabs.
Gates & Gate Posts
- Supply and installation of bespoke swing gates for both external and internal use.
- Galvanised mild steel construction to ensure durability and low maintenance.
Design & Engineering
- Development of detailed fabrication drawings aligned with the architect’s intent.
- Load testing and safety compliance checks.
- Consideration of heritage restrictions, ensuring all fixings and interfaces respected the historic fabric of the building.
HZS Stainless Steel’s works created the safe circulation routes and controlled access points essential for Phoenix Mill’s new role as a modern workspace and cultural venue.
By delivering the staircases, balustrades, and gates on time and in line with specification, HZS helped keep the wider programme on track. Careful detailing, coordination, and site execution ensured compliance with heritage requirements while meeting modern safety standards.
The result was a high-quality finish that fully met the client’s expectations. Henley Restoration & Remedials noted their satisfaction with the standard of workmanship, responsiveness, and reliability shown throughout the project.
